I have observed that my cardiac strain is rarely zero, even when at rest. On checking while asleep recently, my strain varied between 0.01 and 0.03. Is this likely to be significant from a cardiovascular perspective?

Has anyone else noticed a drop in their maximum heart rate after being infected by COVID 19?
-
Good question. I might be down by about 4 or 5 bpm though I think that may be due a difference in my training post Covid. My heart rate was higher than normal at comparable power outputs for the first few months and I tapered down slightly on training as a result.

Thanks Amo. It’s a strange one. My threshold HR is similar but 4 or 5 beats down. My max HR is down by 10 beats or so. I’m basically unable to achieve the same power output (rowing) I was able at the beginning of 2020. I’m guessing my cardiac output is reduced, but I’m no expert. I contracted COVID in November 2020 and wasn’t too badly affected,…Read More

As a healthy female amateur cyclist in my early 60s my cardiac strain is usually around 0.12 max and 0.06 average over distances of around 50km cycle and on occasion close to 100km. I have no discomfort cycling and the summary indicates that the average strain is minimal. The max strain measurements of 1.2 are short lived and look like a small…Read More

Occasional spikes are very unlikely to be significant, especially if they’re not associated with any symptoms like chest pain, breathlessness palpitations, dizziness or unusual fatigue. A simple way to check this on a ride is to set a CS upper limit alert at 0.18mv, and only modify your exercise intensity if you get 3 buzzes in a row, or if you…Read More

I would be interested to hear of thoughts or recommendations from Dr Contractor or Professor Buckley about aspects re: return to running after breast cancer Tx. Appreciating the niche query, thus far I have been unable to find answers through cardiology or pulmonary testing, and have experienced a dramatic decrease in performance in the past two…Read More

Hi Tonniminniti01, I’m sorry to hear about your breast cancer diagnosis and it is great to hear that you have reached the point of recovery where you are running and training. It is not uncommon for breast cancer treatments to affect the heart and for you to perceive a reduction in performance. However, in most instances, training after these…Read More

100s of millions of vaccinations have been given in a relatively short period of time. Millions of cardiac events occurred yearly before Covid and before the vaccine. You mix these 2 factors together, many events will by coincidence occur before, during and after the vaccination event. One has to be careful not to automatically connect the two.…Read More

It is very normal to have a small amount of variation in cardiac strain at rest. Cardiac strain is significant only if the value is greater than 0.1 mV, and the value of Cardiac Strain should be interpreted with context of what you were feeling at the time when the Cardiac Strain was high. So we wanted to ask you- did you have any heart symptoms…Read More
