What are some reasonable ways to monitor client/patient exercise intensity at home during home based activities?

    • There are two sides to this question. There’s the technical and then there’s the non-technical. I have a wonderful slide that I’ve been using for the last 10 or 15 years when I’ve been teaching. It’s got a picture of Paula Radcliffe running and it’s got a picture of a group of cardiac rehab patients exercising in the gym. The thing is that they both have the same ability in one area, and that’s to perceive their level of exertion and explaining to the patients that if they do enough exercise and they’re taught what the right intensity is, they will know how that feels. I say it’s just like Paula Radcliffe, she knows exactly what pace she’s running at, not from what’s on her watch, but what’s in her legs and what’s in her breathing and how quickly the landscape is passing by in her peripheral vision. You know, the whole point of being more active is you become more in tune with your body. Now, as part of that teaching process, if we can have a monitor that can more precisely get people into the right zone and allow them to learn it, what that feels like, and Paula will have had that because she had her sports science team helping her find that physiologically and her performance team. There isn’t any reason these days why everybody in the public can’t have the same level of support as an elite athlete now in terms of exercising and eating and living life to perform at their optimum.
