My HRV seems to be very low – about 4ms on average. I am fit and healthy and do mainly cycling – just done 4 hours at 185W output which I think is decent fitness. HR between 62 and 136 for those 4 hours with average of 120. All my stats seem fine except the HRV which seems extremely low. Should I be concerned? Can I do anything about it?

    • Hi Nick,

Thank you for reaching out to us.

Heart Rate Variability is a measure of the variation of time in between each of your heart beats. These variations happen due to the interaction between two parts of your autonomic nervous system – Sympathetic ( Fight or Flight) and the opposing Parasympathetic (Rest and Relax) system.

The Frontier X uses the Root Mean Square of Successive Differences between RR intervals to measure your HRV. When measured continuously, most individuals have HRV values between 0 – 100, where higher values are better. It is normal for HRV to vary during the day depending on the time of measurement. When continuously monitoring HRV, it is normal for HRV to be minimal during exercise, and reach its highest value during deep sleep.

A higher HRV means that there is a greater variation between heartbeats and is associated with a healthier autonomic nervous system, and better quality of life . Activities like relaxation, yoga, meditation and moderate exercise training can lead to increased HRV over time, which is a positive indicator for good heart health.

We hope your query is answered.

      Thanks and Regards
      Fourth Frontier.

      • Hey Nick, I am a cyclist as well and find the same thing. My HRV is low through activitiy. Usually increases when resting or sleep.
