Used to run a lot during my 20s. The intensity and frequency decreased during my 30s. Am gradually getting back to regular runs in my 40s, hoping to rediscover my 20s self. But, I am being told that running may not be a good idea and that I should switch to weights and strength training. Logic and Physiology would suggest the switch, but I don’t want to lift weights. I want to run like I used to. Any recommendations on how I can continue to run without necessarily resorting to weights or strengthening?

I’m back to running in my late 60’s after quadruple bypass. I did fly to Cleveland (Mecca for Heart issues) and my cardiologist, Dr Singh, is in the Sports cardiology department there. We do tele-med sessions plus an annual onsite. No reason not to run, but do it right. Try books : 80/20 running and Chi Running.

it depends on why you were told not to run. I can’t see any reason for omitting easy endurance runs (<Z2) assuming you have no health issues. weights will ultimately make you faster and as you get into your 50s and beyond they are vital to maintain muscle mass.
